26 AUGUST- 2 SEPTEMBER: PROJECT -- ORGANIZING THE WEB WITH NETVIBVES (30 points) (Since Labor Day is a Monday, your usual day to turn in assignments, you can turn in your assignment on Tuesday.)


Organizing information in the library will go far beyond the issues associated with the catalog. Most cataloging will be purchased when you buy the item with the exception of a few items. Now that the library is fully integrated into the digital age, organizing Web information -- pages, video, audio, etc. -- will be something you can't purchase.



NETVIBES PROJECT
Here are the instructions from the Netvibes site for creating public pages:

Firstly, to create a public page you must have a Netvibes account.
Once you're registered on Netvibes, creating a Public Page is fast and easy to do:
  • Log on to your Netvibes page
  • Click on Create my public page (top left of page)
  • Confirm you email
  • Next
  • Your Public Profile
  • Next
  • Your public address and Account type
  • Finish
An email will then be sent to your email account detailing the activation process.
If you don't receive any mail, please refer to your spam/junk email folder. If the e-mail is not in the spam folder, please send us an email via the Feedback Form at http://www.netvibes.com/static.php?show=feedback.
Once your the Public Page is activated, you will be able to access on http://www.netvibes.com > Go to my public page (top left of page)
When you first log into your Public Page, you’ll see that there’s no logo, just a title that says ‘Type your page title here’. Click it and give your page a name.
Of course, there’s a whole lot more. You can use your Public Page to:
  • chat with other netvibers and display the My Wall widget located in Add Content > Essential Widgets
  • use your creativity and customize your page via Settings > Themes / Wallpapers
  • display your favourite songs and embed the code in the HTML widget also found in Add Content > Essential widgets
  • use photo albums like Flickr and Picasa.

PROJECT
Now that you have an idea of how Netvibes works, create five tabs (pages) for five different topics that your teachers would use from year to year. The point of your pagecast is to gather pertinent information that the students can access easily which will be updated regularly. You will need at least 10 information modules (mixture of RSS feeds, widgets, pictures, etc.) on each page. (25 points)

Be sure to include the following types of information:
  • RSS feeds (blogs, etc.)
  • Books -- 2 suggetions: a) use book covers and the Dewey number to the item in your library (Essential widgets > Image widget) is one way to do that; b) link to Google books
  • Web sites
  • Database information
  • Any text-based information that will be helpful (Essential widgets > Webnote) is one way to do that
  • Videos
  • Podcasts

Reflect on your experience in developing your Netvibes project. (5 points).

NOTE the comment from a previous student, "I found myself using the “Link module” and “Web page” widget (found in the ESSENTIAL WIDGETS section) the most since you can insert Web sites into these [pages] and then display them that way. The “Web note” widget was also useful as a way of making an announcements section of the Library Home Page which was one of my tabs." (I would recommend building at least several of your tabs using Web sites that you have found that particularly develop the theme of the page for you as many of the widgets built into Netvibes may not work at your school because of your filters. Build several tabs at least from Web sites that you have bookmarked already and know would build information portals your students would use. 23 Feb. 2011)

Post both the link to your pagecast and your reflection about the experience to the DISCUSSION BOARD in order that others may see your handiwork.

HINTS for a better Netvibes project
  • Overall: Choose topics that are significant and lend themselves to a breadth of information sources being collected on each page.
  • Have a focus for your project. Is it for students? Is it for staff? Is it for you? Each tab should have a separate focus if the entire document doesn’t have a singular purpose. In other words don’t mix your “to do” list with a video for students on how to use Dewey on the same tab. The focus is watered down.
  • Page layout. Use visuals as well as text – at least mix it up. All text can be overwhelming.
  • Indicate the information format. Since this assignment is an exercise, I want you to experiment with a wide variety of modules in Netvibes. Since you will be mixing up the kinds of information formats that you will be experimenting with, please indicate in the label for the module if it is a podcast, video, image, database, etc. if it is not clear in the label for the module. You can see from the example below that I’ve identified the book trailer module as a (video), the book cover module as an (image), EdTechTalk module as a (podcast), etc.
